Tarlabasi Apartment

Renovation of an apartment in a turn-of-the-century building located in the volatile Tarlabasi area of Istanbul, is an attempt to bring out the simple and solid character of the original space. Once build as residences for the foreigners who lived and worked in Beyoglu area, buildings of Tarlabasi, with generations of increasingly less affluent residents, have accumulated haphazardly put together layers.

After peeling these layers off, the house was re-oriented around the kitchen, intended for a tenant who loves to entertain.

A custom designed Corian counter provides the work and social space while the birch plywood cabinet wall contains the remaining tools and facilities. All rooms open into this previously tucked away space, now comfortably placed in the center.
