Studio-X Istanbul

The Studio-X network, a brainchild of former dean Mark Wigley of the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation at Columbia University, New York - USA, is an Urban Laboratory housed within the Borusan buildings in Salıpazarı, Beyoğlu. With the first Studio-X space established in NY and later expanded to Rio de Janeiro, Mumbai, Beijing, Johannesburg and now Istanbul, a network has been established that can carry a global discussion of “What is the future of cities?”

The 600m2 split-level space is planned such that a multitude of exhibitions, workshops, lectures and research can take place in parallel or independently in a variety of configuration. No setup is permanet as the space is continuously rearranged, permanently under transformation.

The space, formerly housed an insurance branch, called for a dramatic change to accommodate and inspire new ideas, thus apart from being stripped from its previously multiple layers of gypsum-board poche, two holes were blown into the concrete deck to allow for better interaction between the different levels of the studio.

"EXPLORE YOUR SPACE” was the invitation movie created for the opening - the invitation still stands!
