Camp City: Urbanization of Refugee Capms

The United Nations announced that this year has seen the highest total number of refugee cases worldwide since World War II. How much longer will we ignore this issue? Echoing Borders: The Shelter, The Camp, The City, The State is a comprehensive series of workshops to be held in both Amman and Istanbul that aims to tackle the questions raised by the worldwide refugee crisis.
Over the course of the workshops, the reasons and the spaces of forced migrations to Turkey and Jordan will be studied. The results will be included in “Architecture of Peace: Refugee” exhibition starting at Studio-X Istanbul on February 20th, 2015.
Is it possible to plan for the refugee? In addition to the new national and international policies regarding migration and refugees, an ongoing effort focuses on the planning methods and design approaches for refugees in the city or the camp. This workshop tries to expose and reflect on the evolution of distinct architectures of temporary refuge - both encamped and increasingly within the city fabric - as a direct reflection on the shifting definitions of citizenship, shifts in immigration policies and refugee status in Turkey and Jordan.
